The Chipstead Valley weather station lies within a dry, chalkland valley on the dip slope of the North Downs. The valley is around 60 metres deep. The flat valley floor is in places only 50 metres in width.  The valley is notable for its large diurnal temperature ranges with some particularly low night minima.

There are several reasons for this including a railway embankment which crosses the valley and ponds the cold air.

The valley lies only 15 miles from Central London yet rivals the Highlands of Scotland for extremes.
